Can you teach me how to promote my website? This is one most frequently asked questions that we receive, so we decided to show you every step that you need to take, to get your website and content ranked in the search engines, and get a good flow of visitors to your website
Not only is this article aimed at promoting your website, it will also show you how to promote new content that you have written, and will detail the exact steps you need to do after you have pressed the ‘publish’ button which will lead to traffic and rankings.
This article, is in two sections
First we will make sure that the page that you want to promote is ready, by doing an on page SEO (Search Engine Optimization) check – these are simple steps that need to be carried out on every web page that you publish.
Second, we will be covering the steps you need to take to start to get your content indexed, in the search engines and getting visitors to your post.
Make Google LOVE your site, with solid on Page SEO
On page SEO is an important step, as it is the foundation on which your page ranking is built, get this part wrong, and it is unlikely that your page will rank, so take time and go through each of the points below.
Keywords Keywords and Keywords!
Ensure that the main keyword is within the URL of your page, for example, my main keyword for this article is
‘how to promote my website’ so my url is ‘http://www.sitegap.com/how-to-promote-my-website/’
The keyword should also be in your title of your page, try to make it compelling, and keep the length of the title under 60 characters, so that the whole of your title display in the search engine results.
This is sometimes difficult when you are using long tail keywords, as the keyword itself can take up most of the characters.
My keyword above displays 26 characters (Including Spaces) so I use ;

Although not a great title, (Difficult Keyword!) I think you will agree that it sounds a lot better that just using the keyword itself, and is a total of 60 characters. (Phew!)
Write Great Descriptions to Get More Clicks
The Meta description, is the text that describes the website or webpage, and is shown directly under the title in Google or Bings search results. You should use between 150 and 160 characters for your description and your keyword should be featured early on in the copy.
You should include your main keyword early in the description text, and you should write the description, exactly as you were to write an ad – getting the main points across, as this needs to entice any visitors to click on your listing on the results page.
Target One Keyword Only For Best Results
You should only be targeting ONE keyword for your article.
Your article should also be peppered with two or three LSI (Latent semantic indexing) keywords. (These are keywords, that are related to your main keyword) This helps Google and the main search engines, determine exactly what your content is about.
A good way to discover LSI keywords is to go use the Google Keyword Planner Tool.
Create an account if you don’t already have one, go to ‘Find New Keywords’ and type in the keyword you are targeting.
The keywords that are returned, are those that Google considers relevant to your main keyword
Choose 3 or 4 of these words and include them within the article copy, as long as it can be done naturally.
Internal Linking – A Related Content Sitemap For Your Visitors
Linking your internal pages together is vitally important for SEO, as it helps Google find and rank your other pages, and for your visitors, enables them to find related content to which they may be interested in.
When created links to other pages on your site, you should create an ‘Anchor Text’ link, and this should be within the copy of your article.
The anchor should be the main keyword or related keyword to the page you are linking to.
Here is an example of Anchor Text.
I want to target the keyword websites for sale which is to point to my home page.
As you can see the keyword, is now hyper-linked with the phrase I am targeting for my homepage – this is called anchor text.
Include Alt Tags Within Every Image On Your Web Page
Ensure images have alt tags. If you using images in your content, ensure that you have included an alt tag. WordPress makes this easy for you, as it automatically creates the alt tag directly from the image file name, however it is recommended that you use your own alt tags.
Improve Your Search Engine Ranking By Linking To Authority Websites
Not all links should be affiliate links!.
Google, has a mission to serve its customers with the very best content, to keep its customers happy so by offering additional value to my visitors, outside of my own website, I am creating a great user experience on the eyes of Google.
For example, if I am writing a post about ‘Websites For Sale’ and I link out to Empire Flippers, (an authority site in my niche) , Google thinks ‘Hey – this site, is offering real value to its readers, by giving them additional information from another site, we will give this some extra ranking votes.
Thats not to say, you should include links to your main competitors, but you can add links to news articles, or Wikipedia posts or any site, that has big authority, just make sure that the page you are linking out to gives your visitor more, or related information which adds even further information to the content you have included in your post.
One extra note on the above – only include one or two outbound links per 1000 word article, and vary this on every piece of content you write, 1 link on one page 2 on another, and none on the next – you get the picture – again, just keep it natural, with your visitor in mind.
Embed Videos In To Your Content
If the opportunity lends itself, include a video which further enhances your content.
If you are able create your own video, as you can then post this on You Tube, and other video sites, and include a link directly back to your post, this is a great internet marketing strategy.
You may will also someone who can create a video for you over at fiverr for just five bucks!
Alternatively head over to You Tube or Vimeo, and find a good quality video that will enhance your web page, find the embed code, and add this to your page.
This video tutorial shows how to embed a You Tube video to your WordPress web page
Get enough people to share your content, and your traffic will explode
You should ensure that you make it easy for readers to share your content.
At the bottom of every post, you should have links to the popular social media sites, such as Google Plus, Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, Digg etc, and include a title, such as Share Me, or ‘If you like our post please share’
This enables your readers, to add your content to their social networking sites, which will be seen by all of their friends and followers, who in-turn, will share with their connections, this one process alone will gain you a lot of exposure, a lot traffic, and a lot of followers.
If you are using WordPress there are plug ins that allow you to do this, one of my favorites is Simple Share Buttons, which is used on this site. It has an array of display options to suit your taste, and match your website, and also a skyscraper, this is a social sharing widget that moves with your content as the reader scrolls down the page.
I prefer to have social media links at the bottom of my post, as my thoughts are that people should only share if they have read and enjoyed my post, and felt that it is worth sharing.
Let your readers share their opinions with comment engagement.
With WordPress and blogs in general, you will have the opportunity to allow your readers to leave comments at the bottom of your post.
This is great way to get others to add valuable and relevant content to your post, and also to keep your post regularly updated.
A great way to encourage readers to leave comments, is to finish your post with a question. For example, this post is about Website Promotion Techniques, so I would add something like – ‘If you have any additional techniques or recommendations for promoting your website please let us know your thoughts below’
Also, make sure that you reply to everyone, this gives you an opportunity to show your expertise, and again add more content and SEO value to your page.
Promoting Your Website and Generating Floods of Traffic.
You are ready to let the world know about it and start to promote your website or your post.
So here are the step by step website promotion blueprint, that you should follow every time you press ‘Publish’
Ensure your xml Sitemap has updated.
Open up your website xml address (usually http://yoursiteaddress.com/sitemap.xml) open the posts section, and check that your post is listed.
If your post is not listed, you will need to manually update from within your xml plug in settings page.
Ping Your Webpage.
Pinging is a way to notify all of the major search engines, and webs directories, that you have published new content to your website.
This is very easy to do, and should be done once every time you write a new post, but no more than once a day.
My preferred service is http://googleping.com/ as it notifies many directories, and what’s more you are also able to add your RSS feed url, to add to RSS directories.
Share Your Content With Your Social Media Connections
If you do not have accounts at the major Social Media sites, you should go and sign up now with Google Plus, Twitter and Facebook
Add your post to each of these sites, and make sure your settings are set to public.
If you have installed a social media sharing plug in, you can do these easily by going to the bottom post, and clicking on the relevant, share button.
Try to write a unique title, for each share, and a few words of what the article is about. Make this count as you want your existing followers to click on this link, and read your post.
Bookmark Your Site or Webpage
Bookmark your post at two or three of the major bookmarking sites, such as Delicious or Folkd, this helps index your website and content quickly
Bookmark And Ping Your Shared Content
Bookmark each of your Google+, Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook post URL’s – Use different bookmarking sites to do this. You should then ping each of these Social Media Pages as detailed in step two above.
Create An Internal Link From One Of Your Existing Website Pages
If one of your existing blog posts on your website, is getting good traffic, put a link on here, with your anchor text.
Send A Message To Your List
If you have a list, send an email, inviting them to read and comment. This only needs to be brief, and could say something like –
“I have just written a new post, giving you step by step instructions on what to do after you have written a blog post. Please take a look and let me know your thoughts in the comment section below the article. I would also appreciate it if you could share the article, with your social media following, there are one click buttons at the end of the post”
Share Your Content With Your Social Media Communities
If you belong to any Facebook or Google Plus communities do exactly the same thing – you are reaching out to as many people who share your interests as possible.
Add Your Content To PDF And Video Sharing Sites
Create a summary of the main points of your post and create a PDF and add to Slideshare.
You should create a Powerpoint presentation, and turn this into a Video, and add to You Tube, Daily Motion or any of the other other video sharing sites. You can get a free tool to convert Powerpoint to videos at camstudio.org.
So they are the exact steps you need to promote your website, and website content every time you create new content.
